Cherokee District Committee
February 2008 Minutes
Meeting was called to order at 7 pm .
Members and guests present: Chip Smith, Norm Lindsay, Ricky Martin, Hazel Post, Bill Post, Sharon Hamlett, Joe McCargo, Terri Felder, Willie Ore, Kristi P, and Todd Whalen.
A motion was made by Bill post to accept the Minutes from the January District Committee Meeting. A second to the motion was made by Norm Lindsay; the minutes were approved. A correction to the minutes was made: The Scouting for Food bags dates are Feb 2 and 9, not Feb 1 and 8.
Membership
- New Units will include the following: Eden Rescue Squad (Venture Crew), Reidsville Christian Church (Boy Scout Troop), and Rising Star Baptist Church (Boy Scout Troop).
- Steve Halm is the District Membership Chairman and we need to add about 3-4 people to this committee. One in particular is the Webelos to Scouting Transition person.
Finance
- Currently we are at 52% of goal in FOS.
- The 2008 Caswell County Award of Excellence was held on Friday, Feb 1, 2008. We had 320 people in attendance and raised over $15,000.
- In Person County, we will do the Golden Eagle Banquet and Dr. Jim Owen will be our honoree. This event is on Friday, April 11, at the Homestead Festival House in Timberlake, NC.
- In Rockingham County, the honoree is Pleas McMichael and the McMichael family. The date and location are not yet determined.
- Ideal Year of Scouting - 2 dates set for April.
Training
- No dates are currently set for New Leader Essentials Training in the district for Cub Scout leaders.
- Boy Scout Leader Training is Feb 23 at the council office for Part 1; Part 2 will be held at Hagan Sea Base on March 8-9.
- Wood Badge will be in the fall of 2008 at Camp Cherokee. A Wood Badge presentation will be done at the Rockingham County Roundtable in March at Ruffin Stacey Baptist Church.
- Eagle Board Training will be done at the end of March (Bill Post will help arrange this).
- April 4-6 will be tower training at CSR.
Activities
- Hunt and Fish Day will be held at Woodfield and sponsored by Gander Mountain and hosted by Pack and Troop 513.
- Cub Scout Day Camp is June 23-27 at Camp Guilrock . Cost is $45 per Scout. Jeff and Callie Gleiser will be Camp Director and Program Director. Some staff members are still needed.
- Fall Family Encampment - September 26-28 at CSR. Terri Felder is chairperson of the event. The date in the calendar is not correct.
- Spring Camporee - Sharon Hamlett will chair this event to be held at Piedmont Community College in Roxboro , NC on April 4-6. There will be 3 Merit Badges offered. See website or a packet for more information. T-Shirts need ordered by March 3.
- District Pinewood Derby race is May 10 at Lowes Home Improvement Store in Reidsville. Tom and Terri Felder are chairing.
Advancement
- Merit Badge College: Great job by Tom Felder for chairing this event. A big thank you goes to Piedmont Community College for their support and help to hold the event at their facility.
- Ricky Martin is the Cherokee District Advancement Chairman.
- Sharon Hamlett had a question about a special needs Scout. We need to talk to Ted for help on this.
Camping
- Swim Checks
- April 7 and 21 at the Eden YMCA from 6-8 pm.
- April 13, from 3-5 pm, swim checks will be at the Hillsborough Sports Complex. See Sharon Hamlett for more info on this location.
- Camp Promotion Day - February 24 at the council office from 3-5 pm.
- Dave Abbott is Camp Director at CSR.
- Woodfield Camp Director is Dan Dobbins.
Order of the Arrow
- Person County OA Advisor is Patrick Craft.
- Rockingham County OA Advisor is Jeff Gleiser.
- O.A. Spring Fellowship is March 14-16 at CSR and the cost is $30.
Commissioner Service
- May Roundtable will be at CSR with Steve Hale as guest speaker.
Other?
- John Bolles would like pictures for the website.
Next Meeting
- The next District Committee Meeting will be Thursday, March 20, 2008 at CSR.
- A motion to adjourn was made by Bill Post; a second to the motion was made by Terri Felder. All approved; the meeting was adjourned.
